- Larry - I don't think I got my point across.
-
- In an accounting application, you may have a group of files for a single
- company. These would consist of a chart of accounts, a file of transactions, a
- file of inventory items, a file of purchase orders, etc.
-
- The "Open" menu command would bring up a window showing a list of the
- "companies" available - one company for each group of files. The "New" command
- would create these files.
-
- After the user has used "Open" to load these files, there are still no windows
- open because you don't know what he wishes to do. If he selects "Invoice
- Entry" from the menu, then you would open a window that would allow him to
- enter invoices. He may wish to close this before going into an "Accounts
- Receivable" menu selection so the screen will not be cluttered.
-
- I think that instead of having a continually open window that shows the
- document name (I have gotten some complaints about having it around all the
- time), the list of the "Companies" (really sets of files) that are loaded could
- be listed in the "File" menu with the active company checkMarked.
-
- If none of the menu items (such as Invoice Entry) are enabled, the user knows
- that there are no companies loaded. He knows which one is active by the one
- checkmarked under the File menu.
-
- This is the best solution I have come up with so far and seems in the spirit of
- the Macintosh user interface. I just haven't looked at what I must do to make
- it work with no windows open.
